This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
